In a genuine display of kindness, 43-year-old Joe Thomas just proved to the world what kind of a man he is. When he thought no one was watching, this IHOP employee offered to help feed a disabled customer because he wanted her husband to get to enjoy his meal while it was still warm.
The Springfield, Illinois IHOP server is now being hailed as a true hero. Because he did this kindness when he thought no one was looking, he didn’t do it for glory or to become famous. He did it because deep down, he is a generous and loving man.
But little did Joe Thomas know, but another customer, Keisha Dotson witnessed the act of kindness and snapped a picture of the IHOP server. The fellow customer watched Thomas help feed the disabled woman and even wipe up her face with a napkin. All while her husband enjoys a warm meal from across the table…
Because Keisha Dotson was impressed by Thomas, she posted the picture of the man helping the disabled customer and her husband on the IHOP Facebook page. It immediately went viral and now all of Springfield, Illinois is hailing Joe Thomas a local hero.
“Today while visiting your Springfield, IL location on Dirksen, I witnessed a very touching moment involving one of your servers. A man and disabled woman were dining and your server sat down with them and proceeded to help feed the disabled woman while her companion enjoyed his food. My faith in humanity has been restored a little today.”
Thomas has become a local celebrity. But he has shrugged off all the attention claiming his parents simply raised him right. And in the incident caught on camera, he was just doing something nice for a regular customer. He didn’t care who was watching.
“I just love helping people, he told WAND-TV. “Every Saturday they’ll come in and they don’t even need menus or anything. I know exactly what they want. My mother and father always told me to treat everybody as equals, no matter what race, creed, color, whatever. Treat everybody equal.”
Because the woman has Huntington’s Disease, she struggles with daily tasks like eating. Joe just wanted to help make her life a bit easier and help relieve the burden her husband feels taking care of her. The disease causes a progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain.
“I always see him stop eating to feed her and I was like ‘heck if I’m not doing anything why don’t I go feed her so he can eat and everyone can be happy?’” said Thomas to Fox News.
Because he wanted her husband to enjoy his food while it was hot, he helped cut up the woman’s eggs and feed her.
“I didn’t really offer. I just started doing it,” Thomas told CBS. “I told the gentleman ‘Sit down, eat your food. I got her.’”
Ever since Joe Thomas joined the IHOP team, his coworkers have constantly praised his persona and work ethic.
“Joe has been doing it for a long time with these customers, and they are really great,” said one.
“Ever since I started working here every weekend that couple comes in and he feeds her every single weekend,” said another.
